The Captain's Log - June 2017

May has been my busiest month so far. I have played golf on 19 of the 31 days and below are some of the highlights of the month.

Mayday 1st May
Played in the Barbara Cherry Mixed match. The weather wasn’t great, but there were some brighter spells, both with the weather and the golf. The winners were Liz Stephens, Peter Haggar, David Rosedon and Dave Wright with 66 strokes. Many thanks to the Ladies section for organising the day.

Wednesday 3rd May
Represented the Club in a Vets League match at Lullingstone, partnered by Doug West.

Friday 5th May
We hosted the Mayor’s Charity Day and I was in one of the 6 BHGC teams that played in the event. An Elvis Tribute Act was engaged to entertain during the evening and it was good to see the club full for that.

Tuesday 9th May
Represented the Club in a Vets League match at home to Dartford, partnered by Tony Bonds. We won 4 matches and halved the other.

Wednesday 10th May
7 of us represented the club at Jim Thomas’ funeral in Leatherhead. A sad occasion, but Jim was very well remembered by the priest and the tributes from his family.

Thursday 11th May
Was invited by the Ladies Section to dine as their guest at their Spring Meeting. Many thanks to Lesley Wright for buying the 1st prize for me, which was presented to Gwen Winch – winner of the main competition during the day.

Saturday 13th May
Supported our team in the North Kent Trophy match at home to Eltham Warren GC.

Wednesday 17th May
Attended the golf and AGM of the Society of Kent Captains at West Kent Golf Club. 8 of us attended from Bexleyheath, in which we were fortunate enough to dodge the bad weather. Many thanks to President Mark for entering me in the competition, and to my playing partners on the day - Harry Wanless, John Wilkes and Martin Cunningham.

Saturday 20th May
I went to Kings Hill GC to support our team in the Yeoman’s Trophy. They all played very well but we lost 2 games to 1, principally due to their golfers benefiting from knowledge of their greens – birdies and an eagle are difficult to beat.

Sunday 21st May
Supported our team during the afternoon session in the singles part of the Jack Hicks Tournament, at home to Tunbridge Wells GC. Well done to our victorious team, and good luck in the next round against Holtye – date to be confirmed.

Thursday 25th May
We had our friendly match away at Dartford GC, and after a close fought contest we lost by 3½ to 2½. Thanks to all those who volunteered to play, and to VC Tony for doing the organisation.

Friday 26th May
Partnered Sheila Wanless in the Harold Stubbs Memorial Trophy match at Shooters Hill GC, with 6 other pairs from Bexleyheath. Unfortunately SHGC were unbeatable on their own course on the day and I presented the Trophy to their Ladies Captain after dinner. I knew nothing about this competition until the day, so here are a few bullet points:

· Harold Stubbs was a member at Shooters Hill GC, and a Past Captain of Barnehurst GC.
· Mary Stubbs was a member of Barnehurst GC.
· The match was originally played between SH and Barnehurst and the Cup was first presented by Mary in 1983.
· In 1993, Barnehurst closed as a private members club and Mary came to join Bexleyheath.
· The Cup was re-dedicated and since then the competition has continued between Bexleyheath and Shooters Hill.
· Since the re-dedication, we have won it 14 times – SH now 9.

Saturday 27th May
Attended the Society of Kent Captains 50th Anniversary Summer Ball at the Mercure Great Danes Hotel in Maidstone.

Monday 29th May
Played in the Mixed Bank Holiday Scramble. A small number, but an excellent morning organised by our Ladies section.

This coming month, I look forward to your support at the following events:

Friday 23rd June
Our Club Invitation Day – sign up list in the lobby. 1st tee at 1:00pm
Thursday 29th June
Club Friendly – away at Cherry Lodge Golf Club. 1st tee at 2:30pm
Saturday 1st July
Captain’s First Dance – tickets available at the bar

I have thoroughly enjoyed my first couple of months in the ‘job’, and greatly appreciate all the support that has been given to me. I look forward to sharing the next few months with you.

Best wishes
